Your face will be the only key you need to enter your car

Before anybody could imagine that it could become a reality, you have already seen it a thousand times at the movies, on television and in sci-fi literature: doors that open with fingerprints, retina scans to access high-security facilities and the latest trend now is facial recognition. Even to enter the car.

Ford and Intel, an important colaboration

Very soon your face will be the only key that opens your car’s doors and turns on the engine, and this is just the beginning of what Ford and Intel are preparing for their next vehicles’ generation. Their aim is to make driving more comfortable, safe and simple, as well as making the integration of people, cars and technology as real as possible. The car is at the service of the driver more than ever before.

One of the first details that have been revealed about the so-called MOBII project (Mobile Interior Imaging) is a facial recognition system that will not only be the only way to access the car but also, once behind the steering wheel, adjust all possible parameters to meet the driver’s preferences, such as seat and mirror positioning and other comfort options (temperature selection, radio or lighting) and, of course, permission to drive it.

Proyecto MOBII

Share the vehicles

Some might see a problem in the use of cars shared by multiple users. However, Intel and Ford have taken into account all the details. So just as some vehicles already allow you to save settings for multiple drivers and change them by pressing a button, cars that integrate MOBII technology will allow these changes… by showing your face! And this is not all. Facial recognition, as well as Ford’s MyKey technology, will also limit vehicle features to additional drivers, such as speed, number of passengers, or maximum circulation time, among others.

And this is just the beginning. The addition of face recognition to the automotive industry opens a wide range of possibilities for the industry and benefits for the driver.

After watching the video, some people will wonder about the lawfulness and privacy loss that the addition of cameras inside the vehicle involves, but the advantages are obvious. Besides the camera next to the steering wheel, the system also incorporates other cameras that can be accessed remotely. Maybe it will be most useful in countries with low circulation age and where parental control culture is perhaps more entrenched.

The features are yet to be defined and, above all, to be developed, but we are getting closer and closer to the integrated automotive experience. And you, what do you think about this new facial recognition system? Would you integrate it in your car? What other applications based on this technology would be useful to improve your driving experience?
